Title

Baking Disaster

Problem Scenario

I chose this project because I always really liked cooking and I found this project interesting.
Broad Question
Can baking soda substitute for baking powder in a recipe

Specific Question

will baking soda substitute for baking powder

Hypothesis

I predict the baking soda will substitute for baking powder

Variables

Independent Variable:

Height of rise

Dependent Variable:

Baking soda

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Same recipe, Heat of oven

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

I'm going to do my project by baking muffins. I'm trying to find if baking soda will substitute for baking powder in a recipe by measuring the height of the muffin.

Potential Problems and Solutions: Some muffins wont rise but ill have plenty of back ups

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

The oven might be hot I could burn myself

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design pagebefore beginning)

What is your experimental unit? The batch

Number Of Trials: 1 batch of 12 muffins for baking soda and 1 batch of 12 muffins for baking powder

Number Of Subjects In Each trial: 2 batches of muffins

Number of Observations:24 observations

When data will be collected: February 4, 2013

Where will data be collected?: At my house

Detailed Procedure

  1. Get Materials ready to bake
  2. Start oven
  3. When the oven is ready, put the pan of mix both mix baking powder and baking soda
  4. Put the pan in to the oven and start baking.
  5. When baking is done take them out and measure.
  6. record the measurements.
  7. EAT THE MUFFINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Results

The results for my experiment were that the batch of baking powder worked excellent and the batch of baking soda did not rise and for that case the recipe with baking soda did not work. some of my qualitative data was that at the end of my whole experiment I ate the muffins and the muffins with baking powder tasted the best.

Conclusion

My hypothesis was I predict the baking soda will substitute for baking powder because of this I have reject my hypothesis because baking soda did not substitute for baking powder in my recipe. My data shows that all baking powder muffins were larger/taller than all baking soda muffins in my recipe. like muffin #1, #2, #3 for baking soda and baking powder's height was

Muffin #1 Height
Muffin #2 Height
Muffin #3 Height
Baking Soda
1.5 inches
1.3 inches
1.2 inches
Baking Powder

1.5 inches

During my experiment, I baked muffins one batch using baking powder and another batch using baking soda and measuring the height of the muffins. I thought that changing the ingredients/substance would change the height of the recipe. the results for my project was that baking powder won and baking soda did not rise for that case the recipe with baking soda did not work.Discussion

Benefit to Community and/or Science

To show that baking soda does not allow the muffin to rise.

Abstract:

What I did for my science fair experiment was I baked muffins but not regular muffins each had different substances. One batch had baking soda and the other batch substance was baking powder. What I was wondering was which substance was the best in my recipe, But the hard question was how am I going to measure which one is best because I couldn't measure it by taste because that is opinion so I did height. I chose height because a muffins not a muffin unless it rises. At the end of my experiment I found that baking soda one does not taste good and two does not work in a recipe.
